TWAIFHTATRM Chapter 90

The Wealthy and Influential Fiancé has the Ability to Read Mind

Chapter 90

After playing two rounds, everyone had had enough. Tang Nuan’s little brother was right. Those on the other end were real pros, and since they all teamed up, Ye Shuyan won almost every round.

It was rare to see these elites gathered for leisure, and their energetic reactions drew the attention of others nearby. When people saw Ye Shuyan playing mahjong, they were visibly surprised.

However, because of his “cheating,” he was eventually kicked off the table. Ye Shuyan transferred his winnings directly to Tang Nuan.

Tang Nuan, thinking he was done playing, didn’t bother typing anymore and spoke up, “Why are you sending me money?”

Ye Shuyan chuckled, “I just won it. It’s for you to keep.”

The people around him immediately booed. They were expecting him to say, “It’s for you to spend,” but instead, he called it “keep.”

Xie Feiming laughed, “I was thinking of bringing my wife next time but seeing this, forget it. If I do, I’m afraid she’ll start comparing me to you!”

Everyone laughed, but they also understood Ye Shuyan’s attitude toward Tang Nuan and even her family. It was clear that in the future, they could consider bringing their own girlfriends or wives along to gatherings.

As Ye Shuyan wrapped things up, Tang Nuan and her family had just finished making dumplings. Shen Jinhua urged everyone to take baths and change into new clothes, so they could head out to celebrate after their New Year’s Eve dinner.

Tang Nuan put on some pretty makeup, and Ye Shuyan said he would come to pick her up at nine to go out.

After finishing her makeup, Tang Yue called her over because she was also going out, but she couldn’t do her makeup with her right arm in a cast.

While doing her makeup, Tang Nuan laughed, “You two are really determined, one with a broken leg, the other with an arm in a sling, still insisting on going on a date.”

Tang Yue laughed, “A different kind of romance.”

Tang Nuan burst out laughing. When two people are in love, everything seems beautiful.

After moonlighting as Tang Yue’s makeup artist, she passed by Tang Fei’s room and saw him standing in front of the mirror, carefully styling every strand of his hair.

Tsk, this one looks like he’s got something going on too?

At dinner, Shen Jinhua said, “Big Fei, did you spill a bottle of perfume? It’s overwhelming.”

Tang Ben slyly added, “Mom, I think my brother is dating someone. I overheard him on the phone,” he cleared his throat, mimicking Tang Fei in a soft voice, “Alright, I’ll pick you up tonight.”

Then he made a fake gagging motion, “He must be fooling some poor girl.”

Tang Fei grabbed his neck and flicked his forehead, “As a grown man, why are you so gossipy?”

Tang Ben struggled and yelled, while Tang Jinxin laughed, “So, you really have a girlfriend?”

Tang Fei glanced at Tang Nuan, feeling a bit embarrassed, and said, “Yeah, but it’s not official yet. I’ll tell you when it’s settled.”

Tang Nuan thought Tang Fei looked at her because she had noticed something was up with him first, so she smiled without saying anything.

Tang Ben, curious, asked, “So, who is it? Do we know her?”

“Did she mind you being unemployed? If not, you can use the three of us to make yourself look good. At least it’ll prove our family has good genes.”

Tang Fei pulled him back, gritting his teeth, and said, “I’m the owner of an esports club, not unemployed! I’m handsome and smart. What’s wrong with my genes?”

Everyone burst into laughter. Tang Jinxin happily raised his glass, “Come on, Nuan Nuan is getting married next year, but I hope Tang Fei will bring one back for us.”

“Dad wishes all my babies love and a smooth career in the new year! For Xiao Ben, I wish you academic success and top marks every time!”

Tang Ben said, “I also wish Mom and Dad a long-lasting love and good health!”

The whole family laughed as they clinked glasses.

After dinner, Tang Fei grabbed his car keys and ran out. Tang Nuan and Tang Yue’s phones rang one after the other.

Tang Nuan looked at Tang Yue in surprise. “Is Assistant Wen coming to pick you up? Isn’t his left leg broken? I thought you were going to him.”

Tang Yue snorted lightly, “He’s stubborn. What can I do?” Though her words sounded indifferent, her expression clearly showed her happiness.

Tang Nuan gave her a thumbs-up. Assistant Wen was truly impressive, no wonder he could win over her older sister.

As the sisters stepped out, they soon spotted two figures at the street corner: the tall and upright Ye Shuyan and Assistant Wen, sitting straight in his wheelchair. There seemed to be some kind of unspoken tension between the two.

Tang Nuan and Tang Yue exchanged a glance and quickened their pace.

“Brother Shuyan,” Tang Nuan called out.

Ye Shuyan turned, his face lighting up with a smile as he looked at her.

Meanwhile, Assistant Wen, glancing at Tang Yue, wore an expression as if he had just been wronged.

Ye Shuyan took Tang Nuan’s hand and raised an eyebrow at Wen Xingchuan.

Hmph, calling on my Yue Yue to stand up for me. Boss or not, you must still be afraid of my Yue Yue!

Sure enough, when Tang Yue saw Wen Xingchuan’s pitiful look, she glanced at Ye Shuyan before placing her hand on Wen Xingchuan’s shoulder and smiling. “Brother-in-law, let me officially introduce you. This is my boyfriend.”

Tang Yue deliberately emphasized the word “brother-in-law,” causing a flicker of pride to appear in Wen Xingchuan’s eyes.

Ye Shuyan: …

It was rare to see Ye Shuyan at a loss, and Tang Nuan couldn’t help but find it amusing. But while she could laugh, no one else could, not even her sister.

Tang Nuan wrapped her arm around Ye Shuyan’s and said with a smile, “So, my dear sister and sister’s boyfriend, my fiancé and I are off to have fun!”

The words “boyfriend” and “fiancé” were emphasized, hinting that a boyfriend was still quite a distance away from being a husband. It was too early for Wen Xingchuan to feel smug.

But that wasn’t the end. Tang Nuan glanced at Assistant Wen’s leg in a cast and then at Tang Yue’s arm in a sling. Suddenly, she leaped onto Ye Shuyan’s back. He instinctively caught her, and she laughed, “Let’s go, Brother Shuyan!”

Ye Shuyan immediately understood her playful intent and started walking away with her on his back.

Tang Yue was both amused and exasperated, “The car’s still here! Where are you going?”

“They’re just showing off how nimble they are, so childish,” Assistant Wen couldn’t help but quip. He patted his broken leg and added, “This, however, is proof of our love! Besides, if it came down to a race, my wheelchair’s not any slower than they are.”

Tang Yue chuckled, tapping his head, “You’re not all that mature yourself.”

A few minutes later, Ye Shuyan and Tang Nuan returned, and turned out that they did need the car after all.

As soon as they ran into each other again, the “injured duo” couldn’t resist teasing them. Naturally, Tang Nuan and Ye Shuyan retaliated, and after some playful banter, Ye Shuyan drove, with Tang Yue and Assistant Wen in tow, to Chaohai Park.

Chaohai Park was hosting a large-scale fireworks show at midnight. Their plan was to stroll around the temple fair and then catch the fireworks display.

Upon arriving at the park, the two couples went their separate ways.

The temple fair at Chaohai Park was bustling, likely due to the allure of the fireworks show. The crowd was packed shoulder to shoulder, making it hard to move freely. Tang Nuan and Ye Shuyan strolled hand in hand, moving slowly but contentedly. Even when they were jostled by the crowd, bumping into each other made them feel sweet and amused.

After wandering for nearly two hours, they decided to head to the fireworks viewing spot.

There were three main viewing points for the Chaohai Park fireworks show. The first was the riverbank of the Chao River, the closest and most convenient spot for viewing, but it was right by the water. The second was a pavilion halfway up the mountain, and the third was the mountaintop itself, though it was farther away, especially at the mountaintop.

Naturally, they ruled out the riverbank first and ultimately decided to head to the mountaintop, figuring it would have the fewest people.

On their way up, they passed by a stall selling hairpins, and Ye Shuyan tugged Tang Nuan to a stop.

Tang Nuan had noticed that Ye Shuyan really liked her hair. He often played with it, and most of the accessories he bought for her were hair ornaments.

The stall they were at was quite long, and Ye Shuyan wandered off to check out some fan-shaped designs at the other end.

Feeling a bit thirsty, Tang Nuan told him she was going to buy some water from a nearby stall. Just as she got the water, her peripheral vision caught a glimpse of someone, and she froze for a moment. Was that Tang Xing?

Instinctively, she tiptoed to get a better look, but she didn’t see Tang Xing. Instead, she spotted someone else, Tang Fei, who was supposedly out on a date.

Tang Fei saw her and quickly ducked into the crowd, clearly trying to hide who he was with.

A thought crossed Tang Nuan’s mind, and she was momentarily stunned. Was Tang Fei with Tang Xing?

Wasn’t that a bit crazy?

Just as she was lost in thought, she suddenly heard someone shout, “Hurry up! The fireworks show is about to start! There are no spots left!”

A few young guys in the crowd began to rush forward, and instinctively, Tang Nuan took a step forward to look for Tang Fei. She was just at the edge of the crowd and was suddenly swept along with the throng of people. She immediately called out for Ye Shuyan, but it was futile; the excited shouts of young people drowned her out.

Having always been protected by Ye Shuyan, she had never realized how crowded it could get. Now, being tightly squeezed on all sides, she found herself unable to move except to go forward.

Behind her, voices were shouting, clearly indicating that it wasn’t just a few people being pushed apart. Others were calling out, “Don’t shove! Someone’s going to fall!”

Tang Nuan felt even more anxious about looking back. In this crowd, if someone fell and a stampede happened, it could be deadly.

She looked down to grab her phone, only to realize she was holding only the water; her phone must have fallen out at some point. At that moment, she felt a rush of panic.

What if Ye Shuyan couldn’t find her?

Tang Nuan took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. They had agreed to meet at the top of the mountain, so she decided to head there. But when she reached the fork in the path, she struggled to get through to the mountain route but found it impossible to push through.

A middle-aged couple nearby noticed her distress and called out, “Young lady, don’t push! It’s too dangerous like this; if you fall, it’ll be a problem. Once you get to the riverbank, it’ll be much wider! Just think of it like riding a packed subway during rush hour!”

But she had never ridden a packed subway! Tang Nuan suddenly felt tears welling up; she had never imagined a crowd could be so terrifying.

It felt like she was back at eight years old when she fell into the water, being swept up and down in the waves with no way to save herself. Tang Nuan felt a little short of breath.

Ye Shuyan, Ye Shuyan…

Her eyes began to blur uncontrollably, and she quickly raised her hand to wipe them, forcing herself to stay calm. No, she had to steady herself; she wasn’t afraid. She could find someone to borrow a phone to call Ye Shuyan once things settled down.

Not afraid… but it was terrifying… that feeling of despair when called out but no one answered like heaven was unresponsive and the earth was indifferent…

Ye Shuyan, where are you…

Suddenly, a strong hand grasped her arm, startling Tang Nuan. Almost immediately, a wide, warm chest pressed against her back, securely protecting her. A familiar voice sounded in her ear, urgent and soothing, “Nuan Nuan, I’m here! Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, I’m here.”

The pressure around her eased instantly. The tears that she had been holding back flowed freely as she turned to look at him, “Ye Shuyan…”

He opened his arms, shielding her as they moved with the crowd, his voice slightly breathless, “Yeah, I’m here. Don’t cry.”

“Be good, look ahead, and don’t fall.”

Tang Nuan clutched his hand tightly, terrified of getting separated again. Finally, they passed through the fork and reached the open riverbank, where the crowd dispersed, and she let out a sigh of relief.

Only then did Ye Shuyan dare to focus on Tang Nuan. Seeing her red eyes filled with tears, his heart ached as he gently wiped away her tears, speaking softly, “It’s okay now. Don’t be afraid.”

Tang Nuan couldn’t help but pout, burying her face in his embrace and crying.

Ye Shuyan held her close, gently stroking her head as he softly reassured her, “It’s okay, it’s okay. I’m here…”

After a while, Tang Nuan finally calmed down. Ye Shuyan lifted his hand to wipe her tears and kissed her forehead.

Only then did Tang Nuan feel a bit embarrassed. She had cried over the fear of almost getting lost; when did she become so sentimental?

Ye Shuyan chuckled, “You’ve been really strong. You stayed calm the whole time. If you had turned around back there, I would have been really scared.”

As he spoke, he glanced back at the path they had come from. With the fireworks show approaching, the crowd behind them was growing denser, and that little path was blocked tightly. It would be too dangerous to try to go against the flow.

Ye Shuyan looked around and pulled her to a spot away from the water, asking Tang Nuan, “Are you scared here?”

Tang Nuan shook her head. “Not that exaggerated.”

In truth, aside from the seaside, places like pools or lakes didn’t bother her as long as she stayed away from the water. It was just that incident at Jiang Miao’s birthday party when she fell into the lake that had left her with a bit of a shadow regarding water.

“Then let’s stay here for now. When the show officially starts, the crowd should thin out a bit. We can go out then.”

Tang Nuan nodded and then asked, “How did you find me? I dropped my phone and thought you would go to the mountaintop.” She felt a little scared just thinking about it.

Ye Shuyan pointed to her chest and said, “I heard you calling me.”

Tang Nuan thought he was joking about having a telepathic ability, “You’ve been close to me the whole time?”

Ye Shuyan replied, “Pretty far, but even at a distance, I can still hear your voice.”

Tang Nuan blinked in surprise. “So your special ability can get stronger based on your thoughts?”

Ye Shuyan chuckled, “Only with you.”

Tang Nuan pressed further, “So it only strengthens when it comes to me? Does that mean if you miss me, it gets stronger? Should I be careful about my thoughts around you?”

Ye Shuyan pinched her waist and lifted her up, letting her hang onto him. Pressing his forehead against hers, he revealed what she probably disliked most, “It’s always been strong when it comes to you.”

“At first, your effective distance was five meters.”

Tang Nuan froze for a moment. Five meters? No, that wasn’t right—at first it was… So it had increased since then?

She looked at Ye Shuyan’s confident gaze and murmured, “So how far is it now?”

Ye Shuyan thought for a moment. “If I stand at the entrance of your family house’s road, I can hear what you’re thinking about me.”

Tang Nuan instinctively estimated the distance was almost a hundred meters.

She stared at him, stunned. Did that mean all her thoughts had been exposed to him from the very beginning?

Suddenly, she remembered the night of the proposal. No wonder he had said something about her thoughts being wild and mentioned those steamy movie scenes. At the time, she had been too confused by him to think much about it, and later, she forgot. But now, with this revelation…

Tang Nuan recalled everything she had thought, and at that moment, fear was the last thing on her mind; she felt utterly embarrassed.

Ye Shuyan held her tightly as she struggled, just about to comfort her, when he heard her thoughts, how can I keep split personalities over a hundred meters!?

He couldn’t help but laugh. He gently patted her head and said, “You don’t need to split yourself. No, whether you do or not, you’re always adorable.”

Tang Nuan frowned at him, “Can’t you control this? Even the closest people need some privacy!”

Ye Shuyan replied, “I’ve tried, but nothing works.”

Seeing her furrowed brows, he chuckled and said, “So, you’ll just have to accept it.”

Tang Nuan looked at him, while Ye Shuyan was now like a wise elder, intelligent and understanding, continued, “Nuan Nuan, no one can predict what life throws at us, just like you and Tang Xing being switched at birth, and me gaining this strange, uncontrollable ability.”

“These are things we indeed cannot change, but we can decide how to turn them into something good, to take control of our destiny.”

“In the movie you watched recently, didn’t you really like that line? ‘Turn the bitterness of life’s lemons into the sweetness of lemonade.'”

“At first, I was very annoyed by this ability. Even without reading minds, I could roughly know what people were thinking. This ability was just a nuisance to me. I didn’t want to hear all those messy thoughts.”

“But later, I was grateful. It was because of this that I found you.”

“If those annoying voices were the price I had to pay to find you, then it’s nothing at all.”

“I’ve always believed that all the experiences in life, whether bitter or sweet, will not be in vain. One day, they’ll all become your wealth.”

He pressed his forehead against Tang Nuan’s, guiding her, “In the twenty-something years at Tang Sheng’an’s house, didn’t it give you any value?”

Tang Nuan nodded, “Yes.” She looked at Ye Shuyan and said without hesitation, “You.”

Ye Shuyan didn’t expect this answer and was momentarily stunned.

Then Tang Nuan continued, “If it weren’t for the circumstances at Tang Sheng’an’s house, I wouldn’t have had the audacity to try to reach for you, nor would I have worked so hard to move in your direction, and there wouldn’t be the me and you that exists now.”

As she thought about it, Tang Nuan suddenly felt enlightened. “If the misfortune of the past twenty-something years was the price I had to pay to meet you, I think it was worth it.”

Ye Shuyan couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling both amused and moved. He tightened his arms around her and said, “In my view, everyone who wants to achieve something in life has to go through trials. The Tang Sheng’an family was your sharpening stone. Twenty years of hardship honed you into someone strong, decisive, intelligent, hardworking, and dazzling.”

“It doesn’t matter whether Tang Xing gets close, or whether your parents or brothers secretly reach out to her and favor her.”

“We can’t control what everyone thinks, but you can control your own life. Just like when you decided to be with me, you don’t need anyone else to live a brilliant life.”

Tang Nuan, a bit embarrassed by his praise, said, “I’m not that great.”

Ye Shuyan smiled, “You really are that great.” He paused for a moment, then patted her back. “Look.”

Tang Nuan followed his gaze and saw Tang Fei, and the person tightly holding his hand was Li Qiuqiu.

So, he was avoiding her not because he was with Tang Xing, but because he was with Li Qiuqiu?!

Tang Nuan’s eyes widened in surprise. Ye Shuyan smiled and said, “See? Because you’re so good, they wouldn’t want to upset you.”

Feeling a bit embarrassed for her earlier suspicions, Tang Nuan buried her head into his shoulder.

Ye Shuyan chuckled, “What’s there to be shy about? It’s only human nature.”

The countdown suddenly began on the riverside, and many couples started kissing.

Ye Shuyan looked at Tang Nuan with a smile, “Shall we also have a New Year’s kiss?”

Tang Nuan looked at him in surprise. Though he could be quietly affectionate in private, he was usually reserved in public. She couldn’t help but laugh, “Ye Shuyan, you’ve changed so much.”

Ye Shuyan smiled, “Mm, it’s because of you…”

Before he could finish, Tang Nuan suddenly lowered her head and captured his lips. Brilliant fireworks exploded overhead a moment later, and she whispered against his lips, “Almost missed it…”

Ye Shuyan held the back of her head, deepening the kiss as he softly murmured, finishing his earlier sentence, “Because of you. Only you can make me like this.”

Since you spent over twenty years finding me, I’ll spend the rest of my life ensuring your happiness and never letting you face hardship or sorrow again.
